Understanding U is an entertaining, interactive, and educational way for students to learn about each other...from each other! Students attending our Understanding "University," will join friends from throughout the area with the same goals...to gain understanding and promote acceptance of those who are different than themselves.
Students will spend the day making their way throughout our "University" experiencing a freedom to learn from a variety of circumstances. From the adaptive sports arena to our medical training center and school of international relations, students will have an opportunity to experiences differences, focus on issues they deal with on a daily bases, and work together to develop solutions that our society can implement. The hands-on, interactive concept engages students to be active throughout the day while learning and questioning without intimidation.
Older students in the mentor track will have an opportunity to facilitate sessions and work directly with younger students, "mentoring" their understanding and some acceptance activities.
All schools can participate in the program. Grades 3-7 benefit most from participating while students 8th grade through college students benefit from being mentors and facilitators at the event. Schools participate free of charge. Students receive materials, an event t-shirt, lunch, understanding activities, games, and a closing, motivational concert.
